I was glad to present my paper Visual Communication Beyond Borders: A Syrian-British Perspective on Cultural Hybridization and Identity through Art at the International Conference “Somewhere in Between: Borders and Borderlands”, organized by the London Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on 5-6 April 2025 at Birkbeck College, University of London.
With an experience in both academic research and artistic practice, my work explored the intersections of cultural narratives, identity, and language. My recent projects, such as The City Speaks Arabic in Seoul, South Korea, focus on the representation of Arabic culture in foreign contexts, offering a unique perspective on cultural hybridization and the complexities of borders. I examined how visual communication transcends traditional political borders by facilitating dialogue between diverse cultural identities. Drawing from my research into Arabic typography's emotional expression, I analyzed how visual art creates metaphorical bridges between Eastern and Western cultures. The presentation highlighted how artists navigate cultural boundaries, reflecting broader socio-political dynamics. This work resonates with ongoing debates on migration, refugee identities, and the concept of borders as both divisive and connective. The discussion aligned with the conference's themes of border-crossing and hybridization, offering insights into the transformative role of visual communication in bridging cultural divides.
